Stitchery Embroidery

What can I do about these cushions?
My church recently ordered seat cushions for the parishioners to purchase. It's an old church with old wooden benches. Anyway, it would be good to mark the cushion for the individual as they buy, except we aren't sure which way to go with that.
For instance, while embroidery would look best that would mean opening the cushion seams; not a good idea. The woman in charge on this project doesn't like the idea of magic markers. I can't seem to think of another way. Would needlepoint (1/2 cross-stitch) work? Or a cross-stitch? But I can't "hoop" these. Any non-stitchery ideas? Thanks for your suggestions.
What is the fabric? Maybe you could consider fabric paint?
